OpenAI Codex released versions 0.152.0 through 0.158.0 in September 2026, introducing voice conversations, new GPT-6 models at lower costs, and major improvements to the terminal interface and task management.
Models and Providers
- GPT-6 Sol and Luna models: New models available across all tiers with lower token costs for complex coding and high-volume tasks, including Amazon Bedrock integration and migration support.
- GPT-6.1 Sol: Lower-cost variant optimized for complex, repeated work.
- GPT-6-Astra availability: Now selectable in the model picker and available through Amazon Bedrock catalogs.
Voice and Interaction
- Voice conversations: Experimental feature with live transcripts, microphone controls, mute shortcut, and animated display; now enabled by default with F8 toggle.
- Instant interrupt: Steer Codex with new input during model responses or long-running code calls.
- Pets Quick Chat: Type and send messages via pet controls using Option+Space (macOS) or Windows+Alt+P (Windows).
Terminal and Interface
- Fullscreen terminal UI: Offers transcript search, mouse selection, copying with Markdown preservation, configurable copy-on-select, and right-click paste; now enabled by default.
- Terminal themes and rendering: Six new themes, Unicode bullets, checkboxes, aligned equations, and improved Mermaid diagram rendering with more flowchart edges and node groups.
- Enhanced file navigation: Back navigation, recent-files list, and remembered reading position; create folders directly from the file picker.
Tasks and Workflow
- Priority view and task management: Surfaces running tasks, unread updates, and pending responses; hide, archive, or delete tasks directly from the view with worktree ownership details.
- Task @-mentions and queuing: Reference other tasks in the composer; queued prompts sync, remain editable, and send in the background with compact preview on tap.
- Worktree support: Create isolated checkouts for new or forked sessions; worktree-aware tasks automatically remember mode and set up appropriate environments.
Platform and Security
- Background server improvements: Windows sessions can share a background Codex server with daemon lifecycle commands and automatic managed updates; automatic startup enabled for eligible sessions.
- MCP server connections: Support for connecting to MCP servers with pre-registered OAuth client secrets via command line; WebSocket connections secured with bearer tokens.
- Terminal input approval: Enabled by default for elevated commands, reducing unnecessary review prompts.
