Kiro released major updates across its IDE, CLI, Web, and Crew products in September 2026, introducing Claude Opus 5.5 support, workflows for multi-step automation, and significant improvements to session management and reasoning controls.
Models and reasoning
- Claude Opus 5.5: Now available across Kiro IDE, CLI, Crew, and Web for Pro and higher tiers, with 1M-token context window and 2.0x credit multiplier for stronger performance on complex coding tasks.
- GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna with 1M-token context: Support full codebases and long documents in a single request, with requests up to 272K tokens billed at short-context rate.
- Reasoning controls: New /model interface lets you select models and adjust thinking and effort in one place, with reasoning effort choices now available in Kiro Web.
- Claude Fable 5.1 preview: Enterprise users can enable this model via governance for 1M-token context and more reliable multi-file refactors.
Workflows and automation
- Workflows: Run reusable multi-step agent plans in the background across Kiro Web, IDE, and CLI while continuing your parent conversation, with each step in its own isolated session and a dedicated panel to inspect, pause, resume, or steer progress.
- Kiro Crew enhancements: Live settings, durable work queues surviving Gateway restarts, pull request watches for GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket Cloud, and Azure DevOps Services, plus remote crew routing through Jev and support for OpenCode and goose backends.
- Session-wide tool approval: Run /tools trust-all to automatically approve tool calls for the rest of your session in V3.
- Power management commands: Install and uninstall Powers directly in chat or via CLI without starting a session.
Interface and session management
- Fullscreen chat: Dedicated terminal screen with independent scrolling and copy support, plus tunable scrolling speed and clearer live progress displays.
- Session dashboard improvements: V3 dashboard separates controls from the list with search, filter, sort, and grouping options that remember selections; Cloud Sessions now lets you start before attaching a repository.
- Session Search Scope: Index prompts and agent responses to find sessions by Kiro's answers.
- Durable artifacts and document persistence: Agents can create code, diagrams, or images in a preview panel; document attachments persist across long sessions and tabs automatically reconnect with missed activity replayed.
Platform and security
- Untrusted workspace safeguards: Stricter approval checks for file writes, MCP tools, and shell commands, with project .env files no longer loading automatically into chat sessions or tools.
- Enterprise deployment features: Sign-in controls and region-based traffic routing now available for managed deployments; Windows users gain isolated pod support via Task Scheduler.
Several other features and improvements were also released this month but are not listed here.
